The influence of Web 2.0 concepts has caused an influx of new technologies such as blogs, wikis, microblogs, social networks, and virtual worlds. These new breeds of collaborative technologies (CTs), termed “Collaborative Technology 2.0”, are gaining popularity for group communication and collaboration especially in education. As there are many types of CTs, and more forthcoming, it is of value to understand the defining nature and properties of them. This paper will review characteristics of CTs and distinguish characteristics of CT 2.0 with relevant examples. Based on these characteristics, applications of CTs in education will be expounded. A case study on a wiki used in an introductory course to Computing in higher education will be described to share how collaboration technologies can be utilized effectively in education.
